The academic year
Each academic year begins on September 15th and ends on June 30th the
following year. It consists of two semesters of 14 weeks each, including two one-week holidays
for Christmas and Easter. Each semester ends with an examination session of 30 to 45 days.
Selection of students
Admission of students to UM-Pleven is possible after selection of candidates. Selection is based
on scores from the student’s diploma for secondary education (school, gymnasium, college) and
his/her scores from the entrance examinations in biology and chemistry. The questionnaire for
these examinations is different for each medical university in Bulgaria. It covers material studied
in the secondary schools.
About 13 to 17 candidates compete for one vacancy in the last 3 years.
Accomodation
Students, post-graduate students and specializing doctors at UM-Pleven, may stay at the university's
hostel, which has two buildings with about 320 beds. The hostel rooms are double rooms with
bathroom and central heating. The price for a double room is approximately $40 per month.
There is a refectory near the hostel providing lunch and dinner.
Students are not required to live in hostels and may stay at private accommodations. Prices of
flats vary from $50 to $100 per month, depending on the location and facilities.
Living costs
Students will need $200 to $300 per month for food, hostel rent, pocket money including money for books and other materials.
