Methods used in training are based on tradition and experience, combined with innovatory approaches to presenting educational information. The programme includes theory, practical and laboratory exercises, seminars and clinical attachments. Traditional methods are improved owing to the problem-based learning (PBL), which has recently been introduced and the use of contemporary audio-visual resources. Lectures are delivered to large groups of students. Seminars, practicals and laboratory exercises are performed with small groups of 6 to 10 students. Lecturers at UM-Pleven are highly qualified and posses vast and varied academic experience.
Regular monitoring of the small groups is carried out throughout the entire period of studies. Assistant professors are responsible for students’ group training and continuous assessment during the semester.

Assesment
Examination        Examinations are held at the end of each semester. Each examination seesion consists of exams on those subjects which have been completed by that session. Students are allowed to take their examinations during one regular and one supplementary examinations session. The State examination board gives final assessment of the knowledge acquired by the students after accomplishment of their full course through comprehensive theoretical and practical examinations.
After completing the entire course of study and successfully passing all required examinations, students are awarded a diploma of completed higher medical education with MA degree in medicine and professional qualification “Doctor of medicine” with rights of General Practitioner.
Methods of assessment include oral examination, written examination, multiple choice test, practical examination and continuous assessment depending on the subject. Students are evaluated on a scale from 2 to 6.

Approval and control
The curriculum includes 53 different subjects with a total of 5058 hours. The curriculum and the programme at UM-Pleven are discussed and approved by the Academic Council. Each year the programme is prepared by the Teaching Office and approved by the Vice-Rector of Teaching. The contents of the teaching programmes and their cohesion between different departments are discussed at department meetings. Each department proposes changes in the programme for the subjects it teaches on the basis of general tendencies and changes in other universities. The courses in all subjects are regularly updated to meet new requirements in medical education.
The programme and curriculum are renewed continuously by the special Commission for Methodology and Education, which discusses new tendencies in medical education in other universities and regularly proposes changes in the curriculum to the Academic Council.
Problem-based learning (PBL) is integrated into traditional medical teaching.
Feedback information about UM graduates obtained from inquiries at medical offices and competitions for vacancies in our country and abroad, shows good level of training at UM-Pleven.
