ECTS - European Credit Transfer System
The introduction of ECTS and its integration in Socrates/Erasmus Programme has three basic objectives:
  • to provide basis for student exchanges in the framework of Socrates/Erasmus Programme;
  • to create procedures for academic recognition of periods of study abroad;
  • to provide broader access to information on foreign curricula and organization of study.
The system itself does not control curricula or their implementation but creates prerequisites for academic recognition among partner institutions.
How does the system operate?
      Formal basis for organizing student exchanges within the system of ECTS are Bilateral Agreements signed between partner institutions. These agreements describe the rules and organization of student exchanges between two partners. Students wishing to study abroad get acquainted with the program and curricula of the host institutions from the ECTS Information Packages. After choosing the appropriate subjects students sign a Learning Agreement with the home and host institution, which is a formal approval of the selected program. Completing the study program described in the Learning Agreement ensures full recognition of the period of study abroad by the home institution. To present evidence of satisfactory completion of the program, transcript of records is prepared which is given to the student and exchanged between home and host institution before and after the period of study abroad. ECTS credits are the key element in the system. They are a value allocated to course units to describe the workload required for students to complete them in relation to the total workload required for a complete academic year. In ECTS 60 credits are given for one academic year. For more information about this system please refer to the ECTS section of the official web site of Socrates/Erasmus Programme at:

      The introduction of ECTS in UM-Pleven started in 1999 with signing of the first bilateral agreements with European universities for student exchanges and other activities aimed at improvement of quality of education in the framework of Socrates/Erasmus Programme. The first Bilateral Agreements were signed with Universite Libre de Bruxelles (ULB) and Humboldt Universitat zu Berlin. As all students that had the opportunity to participate in student exchanges have shown very good knowledge and clinical skills, the faculties of medicine in ULB and in Humboldt Universitat signed new agreements with UM-Pleven for the next three years. UM-Pleven welcomes every opportunity to extend its network of ECTS partners by signing of new Bilateral Agreements in the framework of Socrates/Erasmus Programme.
